Ethical, Legal and Social Issues in Genetic Testing


OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. discuss the implications of the Human Genome Project (HGP)

engage in critical dialogue regarding the ethical, legal and social issues raised by the HGP

2. discuss autosomal dominant inheritance, e.g., familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)

3. identify and discuss potential therapeutic interventions available for reduction of cholesterol levels in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)

adequately assess and provide preliminary interventions to assist patients diagnosed with FH in obtaining appropriate care

4. describe the characteristics of late-onset progressive disease, e.g., Huntington's Disease (HD).

adequately assess and provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients at risk for/diagnosed with a late-onset progressive genetic disorder

5. discuss the use of DNA analysis as a useful instrument in determining the presence of a "harmful" gene before evidence of clinical manifestation

initiate collaboration and /or consultation with members of the health care team regarding implications of genetic testing and appropriate support

advocate for the patient by ensuring that basic information is shared regarding informed consent and implications of testing

6. identify the ethical issues raised by the availability of presymptomatic testing for an incurable disorder, e.g., Huntington's Disease
