Relevance:

Immunofixation (IFE) is used to confirm the presence of and to characterize monoclonal immunoglobulins or free light chains (Bence Jones proteins).

Notes:

Immunofixation electrophoresis binds antiserum to human immunoglobulin G, A, and M as well as kappa, and lambda. It is also performed reflexively (unless otherwise requested) when an abnormality is detected as part of our Protein Profile/Immunoassay (IA) or Block III. Transferrin and C3 variants are tested by IFE, as needed (surcharge applies). IFES is also included in the Block VI.
