CODIS STR in silico PCR

Outline of the Unit

Goals:

• to introduce students to "in silico PCR" - a way of probing online GenBank sequences using the primers for CODIS loci
• to provide students a guided step-by-step bioinformatics exercise utilizing the online files of the Naional Center for Biotechnical Information (NCBI)

Objectives:

Students will:

• follow the CODIS STR in silico PCR exercise and experience the types of bioinformatics tools available to scientists and student-scientists
• refine their knowledge and understanding of DNA molecular structure and its representation in the language of bioinformatics

Target audience:

Advanced Placement Biology students

1.5 hours
